(The Ciaotou Incident and the Yu Deng Fa House) |

In August 1978, the former Magistrate of Kaohsiung County Yu Deng Fa and his son were implicated in the Wu Tai-an case and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. It was generally believed that the two men were arrested to prevent the disparate opposition (who were known as the “Tangwai” or “outside the ruling party” at that time) forming alliances.Although father and son were soon released, Hsu Hsin-liang, who had supported their cause, was removed from his post as Taoyuan County magistrate. This was the first political demonstration in Taiwan following over forty years of martial law, and is known as the “Qiaotou Incident” in the history of Taiwan’s fight for democracy. The Yu Deng Fa House contains many historical materials related to Ciaotou Incident and Yu Teng-Fa. Aside from learning about Taiwan’s democracy movement, visitors to Qiaotou can also experience another aspect of Taiwan’s culture through its sugar industry. The Ciaotou Sugar Refinery was built in 1901 as the First Ciaotou Sugar Refinery of the Taiwan Sugar Company. It was the first modernized sugar factory of the Japanese period in Taiwan.Following the end of sugar production, in September 2002, it was designated as a county historic site by the Kaohsiung County government and converted for recreational use.The site contains numerous Japanese-era buildings, including workers’ accommodation, a Japanese courtyard, an air-raid shelter, an ammunition depot, a red brick water tower, and a warehouse.A unique feature of the site is the bronze statue of Guanyin located in front of the refinery offices, one of only three of its type remaining.
